How to Delete Temporary Files on Windows
Free up storage space safely by removing temporary files and cleanup clutter on Windows.
Before you start
Step-by-step instructions
1. Open the Windows storage cleanup area
Open Settings, go to System, and then open Storage. Windows usually provides a temporary files section there.
This is the safest built-in method for most users because Windows groups common cleanup targets for you.
2. Review the temporary files categories carefully
Look through the categories shown before deleting anything. Temporary files, cache items, and leftover update files are often reasonable cleanup targets.
Some cleanup screens may include files you might still want, so it is worth checking each category instead of selecting everything blindly.
3. Remove safe system temporary files
Delete the categories that are clearly temporary and no longer useful. These may include cached system items, temporary installation leftovers, or other short-term files.
Items explicitly labeled temporary are usually safer than personal folders or user-managed file locations.
4. Be careful with Downloads and personal folders
Some Windows cleanup views may include the Downloads folder or other user content areas. Review those items separately instead of deleting them automatically.
A file may be old or large but still be something you need, such as an installer, contract, image, or exported work file.
5. Run cleanup and wait for Windows to finish
Start the cleanup and allow Windows to complete the process. Larger cleanup jobs may take more time depending on how much has built up.
The cleanup may not feel dramatic on every PC, but it often helps free enough space to make storage management easier.
6. Check free space again afterward
After cleanup finishes, check your storage again so you can see how much space you recovered.
If only a small amount of space was recovered, larger personal files or unused apps may be the next areas to review.
When temporary file cleanup helps most
Temporary file cleanup is often one of the easiest ways to recover some space quickly.
System and update-related temporary files sometimes build up over time and are worth reviewing.
Before deleting personal files or uninstalling apps, temporary file cleanup is usually a simpler and lower-risk place to start.
